408 SPENCE, JOSHUA 1800-1875 APPLING Joshua Spence was born in 1800 in burke County, a son of Moses Spence and grandson of Tharp Spence and wife Charity Smith, natives of Virginia, who moved to Burke County about 1790. Joshua married Susan Middleton, born in Georgia, 1809. They had the following children: 1. MaryAnn b. 1825, m. Jesse Carter. 2. Elizabeth b. 1827, m. James Carter. 3. Moses W. b. 1829, m. Susan McCall, dau. of George 4. Susan b. 1832, m. Allen B. Howard 5. John M. b. 1834, m. Pheriba Hargraves, dau. of Abr. 6. Emiline b. 1836, m. ________ Cannon. 7. Olive b. 1838, m. George Eason. 8. Irene b. 1842, m. John Sapp. 9. William b. 1844, prob. died single. 10. Stephen b. 1844, died age about 15 years. 11. Miriam b. 1846, m. Dr. ________ Little. 12. Sarah b. 1847, m. Henry Abbott. Joshua Spence was among the early settlers of Appling County, moving there about 1827, and living there until his death about 1875. He lived in the 583rd militia district. His son, Moses W. Spence, and son-in-law, George Eason, were the administrators on his estate, and closed out the estate and were dismissed January, 1877, according to the Ordinary's records of Appling county. Mr. Spence served as 3rd Sergeant in Capt. N. J. Holton's company of Appling County militia in the Indian War, June 9th to Aug. 19, 1838. |

Mr. Spence was living on his farm in the southeastern part of Coffee County when the civil war came on. He organized the first and only Confederate company from Coffee County early in 1862, and when it was organized and mustered into service March 4, 1862, he was elected its Captain, and the company became known as Co. "C", 50th Georgia Infantry Regiment. He was promoted to Major of his regiment, Dec. 21, 1863, and served until he was granted leave of absence Feb. 14, 1865. He then returned home for the first time since entering the service. His service as captain and major was distinguished by his bravery and valor, and he was held in high esteem by the men under him. Maj. Spence served as Representative from Coffee County in 1871-72. He died about 1904, and was buried in the Spence family cemetery near his home. |

Charity was an orphan who had been reared by William Hinds of Burke or Emanuel Co. Children: Joseph, Greene, Leas- ton(who m.
