SPENCE, JOSHUA       1800-1875       APPLING

  Joshua Spence was born in 1800 in burke County, a son 
of Moses Spence and grandson of Tharp Spence and wife 
Charity Smith, natives of Virginia, who moved to Burke
County about 1790.  Joshua married Susan Middleton, 
born in Georgia, 1809.  They had the following children:

 1. MaryAnn       b. 1825, m. Jesse Carter.
 2. Elizabeth     b. 1827, m. James Carter.
 3. Moses W.      b. 1829, m. Susan McCall, dau. of George
 4. Susan         b. 1832, m. Allen B. Howard
 5. John M.       b. 1834, m. Pheriba Hargraves, dau. of Abr.
 6. Emiline       b. 1836, m. ________ Cannon.
 7. Olive         b. 1838, m. George Eason.
 8. Irene         b. 1842, m. John Sapp.
 9. William       b. 1844, prob. died single.
10. Stephen       b. 1844, died age about 15 years.
11. Miriam        b. 1846, m. Dr. ________ Little.
12. Sarah         b. 1847, m. Henry Abbott.

  Joshua Spence was among the early settlers of Appling 
County, moving there about 1827, and living there until his 
death about 1875. He lived in the 583rd militia district. His 
son, Moses W. Spence, and son-in-law, George Eason, were 
the administrators on his estate, and closed out the estate 
and were dismissed January, 1877, according to the Ordinary's 
records of Appling county.
  Mr. Spence served as 3rd Sergeant in Capt. N. J. Holton's 
company of Appling County militia in the Indian War, June 
9th to Aug. 19, 1838.

SPENCE, JOHN M. 1834-1904 COFFEE John M. Spence was born in Appling County in 1834, son of Joshua Spence (Vol.V). He was first married in 1856 to Fairiby Hargraves, daughter of Abraham Hargraves (Vol.I). She was born Nov. 10, 1838, in Appling County, and died March 6, 1862. Born by her were three children, viz: 1. Belinda b. 1857, m. Green H. Roberts. 2. Elizabeth b. 1859, m. Jesse Carter. 3. John A. b. 1862, accidently killed in his youth. The second marriage was in 1867 to Elizabeth Kirkland, born 1850, daughter of Moses and Margaret Carver Kirkland of Coffee County (Vol.II). By her one child was born, viz: 4. Fairiby b. 1868, died age 14 years. The second wife died soon after the birth Of her first child, and Mr. Spence then married Miss Levicy Britt, born 1850 in this state. She died in January, 1914. By her four children were born, viz: 5. Joshua M. b. 1870, m. (unknown). 6. William P. b. 1863, m. Ida White.

 9. James L.               b. 1879, m. Jessie Jenkins.

  Mr. Spence was living on his farm in the southeastern part of Coffee 
County when the civil war came on. He organized the first and only 
Confederate company from Coffee County early in 1862, and when it was 
organized and mustered into service March 4, 1862, he was elected its 
Captain, and the company became known as Co. "C", 50th Georgia Infantry 
Regiment. He was promoted to Major of his regiment, Dec. 21, 1863, and 
served until he was granted leave of absence Feb. 14, 1865. He then returned 
home for the first time since entering the service. His service as captain and 
major was distinguished by his bravery and valor, and he was held in high esteem
by the men under him.
  Maj. Spence served as Representative from Coffee County in 1871-72. He 
died about 1904, and was buried in the Spence family cemetery near his 
home.

The above 2 articles are the only articles on men named Spence in the 1st 7 volumes.  There may be other articles on men named Spence in later Huxford volumes.  There may be other Spences in the indexes in each volume of these & later Huxford volumes.
I do not believe the above statement that Moses is the father of Joshua since
the above Joshua was born 1800 &
the Thorpe below who married in 1795 seems likely (IMHO) to be the Tharp above,
leaving no time for the existance of Moses.

tells me 7 Jan 1999
it is not Moses I should delete, but rather Thorpe/Tharp.

Not having photocopies of documents like wills, deeds, & Bibles,
I cannot verify the relationships & dates given in these books.

   The Spence line is one of the oldest in the country.
William Spence arrived in James Cittie, Va., in 1619.
His nephew, Robert Spence, settled in New Kent County, 
Va., in 1654 and m. Mary Blank.  Their son, William 
Spence, m. Mary Green.  William and Mary Green 
Spence had a son James, b. 1748 in Augusta Co., Va.
James Spence m. Jane Bluford, b. 1751, d. 1795; he 
served in the Revolution.  (DAR "History of Stewart Co., 
Ga."; "Va. State Library Report", Vol. VIII, p. 412;
"Abstracts of Augusta Co., Va.," Vol. 1, pp 388-404;
Spence family Bible.)
   The children of James and Jane Bluford Spence were:
William Spence, b. 1772, m. Mary Anderson; James
Spence Jr., b. 1776, m. _____ Palmer; Bluford Thorpe
Spence, b.1774.
   Bluford Thorpe Spence m. 1795 Charity Smith, in
Burke Co., Ga., relocated Emanuel Co., Ga.  Charity
was an orphan who had been reared by William Hinds of
Burke or Emanuel Co. Children: Joseph, Greene, Leas-
ton(who m. Elizabeth Costow), and Bluford Thorpe 
Spence Jr.
   Bluford Thorpe Spence Jr. b. 1801 in Emanuel Co., 
m. (1) Polly Faun. Child:
   1. Susan Spence, ...
